So you found a great mantel at an antique shop and are thinking of installing it in your home. Before calling someone to install it on your fireplace, you have to remember a few things. First, mantels before were generally narrower. This means that they do not conform to the fire code nowadays. Do not worry though if your mantel turns out to be narrow. You can still install it but it would need a little bit of modification. A seasoned carpenter can easily make it larger so that it complies to current laws.
