What to Do with an Extra Room in the Basement

basement-family-roomIf you have a large basement that does not serve as storage or dumping ground for many household equipment, consider yourself lucky. There are many things that you can do with a large basement. One great idea is to transform it into a game room. You can also section off a part and make a cellar. The former will not have you needing expert’s advice. You only need to set up game, chairs, and a television set to complete your game room. But if you’re thinking of building a cellar, help of experts would be needed. This is because dampness, temperature, and other factors will have to be considered before you can begin playing host to bottles of wine.

Would You Want a Porch Swing?

porch_swing_-_white_wash

I always thought that a porch swing is a symbol of peaceful family living and a warm neighborhood. Imagine a warm summer afternoon. Your whole family is in the porch. You and your little sister are sitting on the porch swing and listening to your father tell a story about his childhood. Your mother is passing along a glass of lemonade to each of you. A neighbor passes on the sidewalk and waves at you. You smile and wave back. Imagine a little piece of heaven centered around a porch swing. This may be a bit of an exaggeration but you cannot deny the fact that a porch swing lets you transport to a time when things are simple and loving. I would want a porch swing in my own house. How about you?

Materials for Building a Bookcase

woodsmith-free-woodworking-plans-low-bookcase-155

I love books and I cannot imagine living in a house where there are no shelves full of books. Right now, I have shelves that I bought from a home furnishing store. Eventually, though, I would want to build my own bookcase. Research have yielded three kinds of wood that I can use for my bookcase. These are plywood, solid wood, and MDF (medium-density fiberboard). I think I will go with plywood because it’s durable enough but not as expensive as solid wood. MDF are cheap but they are not as stiff as plywood. What do you think is a perfect wood for a bookcase?

These are very easy to do and you will be rewarded with the sight of happy birds every time you gaze outside your window. Build a Safe Deck

home_brewster_otherview

Many parties and family gatherings are held in decks. But do you know that most decks are not safe? Perhaps contractors aimed for decks to last long but they did not realize that one material they use does not make a safe deck. This material is nail. It has been proven that almost all decks that have collapsed were assembled using nails. These nails themselves were the reasons that the decks collapsed. What’s even worse is that you’d get no warning before your deck falls apart.

To build a safe deck, bolts have to be used. They are a lot stronger than nails. If you build your deck with bolts, it will not collapse without you knowing.

Don’t Play it Safe for an Open House

How do you prepare for an open house? Do you paint your house all white so that a potential buyer can have a clean slate? In a recent interview, an expert said that playing it safe is a mistake. Apparently, it works to show your personality in an open house. Go for colors and patterns. Pick furniture and accessories that show your personal preference and style. Do you think that this is a great idea? Is this a smart way to sell a house? Will you show your personality in a house that you’re trying to sell?
